DVD- Sankoffa (A Black goes travels to Africa on a photo shoot and ends up going back in time during the slave trade. There's a lot of nudity in this one so be careful who is watching it with you).

My favorites are I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Jubilee and Unchained Memories. Numbers 1-5 are books dealing with slavery. Numbers 6-13 deal with racism and Jim Crow laws. The Color Purple is very different from the movie but excellent none-the-less! Unchained Memories is the most touching because these are stories from actual slaves that were preserved (thank God). It's the most powerful, powerful piece of literature on the subject you can get. You should also read about Sally Hemmings, the mistress of Thomas Jefferson. Very interesting. I would not recommend Uncle Tom's Cabin. There's too many things wrong with it to discuss here. Hope this helped!

Others suggestion are very good especially Roots... but I have to vote for "Having Our Say" The Delany Sisters First 100 years by Sarah and Elizabeth Delany.

Even the VHS movie is good. I know you asked about books but To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck DVD is what we used to discuss racial equality & to examine one. The book is also very good. I'm just more a visual learner so I always try to find both formats.

The Darkest Child - Delores Phillips

It's not about slavery but It is about a Black family living in the Jim Crow era and their intra-family relationship.

Pretty much anything by Toni Morrison, and there's usually a section in a Barnes & Noble or a public library that is reserved for black authors--you may have the best luck there.
