Don't use a knife. Tear it with your hands.
Using a knife cuts the cells in the lettuce, and the juice inside truns the edges brown. Pulling it with your hands pulls the cells apart from each other without breaking them, so it doesn't turn brown.

Gently tear the lettuce with your hands. Also there are plastic knives you can buy that are big and hard, like for chopping lettuce and the lettuce will not turn brown because it is a plastic knife not metal. good luck.

I don't know why it works but I am a granny myself and still doing what my grandmother taught me....buy the lettuce at the store, come home, clean and wrap up in those light weight cotton cup towels....tie it in a knot with the four corners...leave in refrigerator and when time to make a salad, take out what you need and tear. Put the remainder back the same way and you can keep fresh lettuce for a very long time.

ok, this really works so try it! it really dosn't matter how you chop it to me. i cut mine with a knife but the trick is to wash all of the lettuce and put in some kind of container ,then put some dry paper towells on top. i did this and the lettuce just gets more crisp. i saw this on rachel ray.

Lettuce is to be torn not cut by a knife. The blade causes the lettuce to brown.

A plastic knife works perfect. I have a large one made especially for that purpose. No brown edges and you can chop as fine as you like.

If you do not use a knife - it will not turn brown at all.
I tear lettuce by hand always.

A little lemon juice or orange juice will cure that. That happens because of oxidative damage. Both the citric acid and vitamin C in either of those two juices will beat it.
