i believe it's due to the existence of choice that humans find themselves in control of. with animals, they act on what is natural for them to do; the main reason they act is to survive. when a tiger kills an animal for food, its keeping a balance of nature. the question of good and evil is absent.
humans, on the other hand, have a concept of good and evil. when we are presented with choices, we're often deciding between a good or an evil action. sometimes we chose good, other times we chose evil. sometimes the line seems blurred. this distinction doesn't seem to plague animals. we have to constantly deal with morality, which considering our choices, either lowers us, or raises us above the level of animals.
i may be alone in this idea, but hey, its all a part of being human right?
