The dude is a great writer, but, man, is he sadistic or what? If you look at Buffy, Angel, and Serenity (Firefly) in sum, he has killed a boatload of characters -- which I quite respect. It shows real gumption to be willing to remove notable characters from your story and know that, due to the strength and ongoing nature of the narrative (and life), new characters and opportunities will come along. However, having a wantonly destructive, depowered goddess eat her soul seems a bit excessive.

Thoughts? And hey, Josh, if you're out there, how about coming clean with it, bro?

By "her" (as in "eat her soul") I mean Fred Burkle (sic), of course - television's most adorable transdimensional physicist.

As I understand it the original plan was to have Fred possessed by the Blue demon thing Illeria(sp) and the Angel team would fight her for season five, and save her in the end turning her back to normal. With the wage war on Hell plot line being for a later season. However the WB gave Joss the cancellation notice after he had committed to the story arc. So rather than undo that idea, he tamed Illeria by having her share Fred's love for Wesley and had her helping the team to destroy the bad guys.

I still like the last line of the series though... I'm gonna slay the dragon.

Fred From Angel

He killed off Fred, but the actress still got to work. Remember, it was the last season of Angel because the WB had opted not to renew. The deal was, when Buffy left WB for UPN, if WB had decided not to keep Angel, UPN would have picked them up. WB waited until Buffy decided she was tired, THEN they decided not to renew Angel (a little mild revenge there). So Whedon had to wrap up as much of the plotline as he could as fast as he could. Personally, I think the WB threw out the baby with the bathwater, because at the time, Angel was their No. 1 show. They sure as hell didn't ruin Joss Whedon or David Boreanaz' lives -- as a matter of fact, look who's still standing. NOT the WB.

Well, didnt the actress just become a demon or something like that in the last season? I've only seen season 1, but that's what I've read.
