For a charity? We do it like this:

You bug a lot of the people into donating something, could be a massage, chiropractor visit, tannings, turkey dinner, gift certificates, baskets full of bath stuff, tickets to a show, tickets to a play, toys, art, you name it. You lay it all out fr display with a note that tells What the worth is, and leave a sign up sheet at each gift. A place for their name amount they bid. Under that is the line for the next person but their bid must be higher. Then after a while (you usually serve cold spaghetti and bread they had to pay to eat) and then CLOSE the tables. Then lift each item up and announce the new owner and how much they pd to get it. If there were no bids, you could do a verbal auction, make lots of comments about how great it is, example,"Look at this lovely basket that went unnoticed. IT appears to have all the right stuff for a great car wash, wax included. Even a buffer! Come on all you fat butts, make a bid and wax your own car, it is for a good cause." Then start pointing at heavier people in the crowd and say, you look like you could use the exercise, come on, how about bidding five dollars?"

At the end make sure you lock up all the money and no one steals it because it was a lot of hard work putting on ths gig, next time just ask everyone to donate money and stay home.

I have been to some fun auctions but silent auctions are boring. Although I can make anything a little more fun.
