9th June 1870 Charles Dickens died of a stroke at the age of fifty-eight at his home, Gad's Hill Place in Kent. According to family and friends, he had been beset by increasing debility and depression throughout his last months. He kept working on Edwin Drood, kept delivering his famous readings, and kept receiving tribute after tribute, but all was colored by a mixture of exhaustion, regret, and memory. He was buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey.
