If you're in the UK, try a company called 'Envenio'.
I'm a member and get some extra-work occasionally.

There are extras casting places everywhere. I can think of two in San Francisco alone. Anyway, so what you do it, you call and then they have you come in, they take your pic, your measurements, what you are willing to do on film, and your schedule. Then, when someone is needed that looks like you, they call you and you go to work.
I was an extra in the last two Matrix's movies. It was CRAZY on set, but very cool. There were LOTS of people, and it was fun. You have to listen to directions, and you get no say in hair and makeup. Be adaptable, you'll get much farther. Also, be prepared for a lot of sitting around :)
Good luck!

Depending on where you're based sometimes your high school drama teacher is a good port of call. They can often have links to agencies which need child actors. I've had three students who have regular work on the Harry Potter films. Its not particularly glamorous, a lot of waiting around and plenty of homework to catch up on for missed school days.

in the UK there is a source book called contacts which lists most things to do with acting, like acting agencies, production companies etc. You can get a copy in your local library in the reference section. There are many extras agencies and you can usually join more than one at a time. good luck

You have to live in a city where television and movies are filmed and register with casting directors that casts movie extras.
