Speed was killed in the line of duty in the third season premiere, "Lost Son." He had not maintained his firearm very well, and was shot by a suspect when it misfired during a police shoot-out.
Speed was killed off because actor Rory Cochrane asked to be written out of the show. He wants to do films and didn't care for the long days necessary for TV series filming.

First of all, Eric and Delko are the same person and Speed didn't want to be on the show anymore so they kicked him off.
