No you don't have to have a degree in it to keep up with current affairs or politics. Just take some courses and keep studying on your own. Watch C-SPAN, CNN, Fox, and public broadcasting stations. Just read widely and you will do fine.

Most of the politicians we have are no more qualified for the job than the majority of us - many less so.
What most have is drive & ambition to dominate & control.
If you watch & listen, you will learn very quickly that most politicians are economical with the truth & will say almost anything to get themselves elected.
Greed plays a part too - most successful politicians become exceptionally wealthy.
Do many have a sincere wish to help & better society? Perhaps a few when they start but most are corrupted on the way. They'll end up doing what they think can get them holding on to power rather than what might be best for the world.
Study the speeches of politicians, study their performances, the lies they tell.
If you want to get invoilved yourself, join a local party & become an active member.
