Is it okay for me to teach my younger cousin magick?

Nothing big! Just simple charms and candle magick. She's 10 years old and has been asking me to teach her for some time now. I have already told her about not using it for harm if I do teach her. I have even stressed keeping it a secret from her friends. I have also taught her TONS of things about dragons. But I have never taught her magick because I don't know if I should. She has never told any of the things I taught her to others, not even her parents.

What do you think? Should I teach her? Should I make her swear an oath of secrecy? Have I already told her too much? Is she too young?

I would appreciate it if people wouldn't use any rude remarks when answering my questions.

Thanks!

Charms & spells....Probably not to a 10 yr old....But that doesn't mean she can't get a grasp of what magick is...introduce her to the pendulem and show her how to use it to find lost things, such as toys or house keys...I started working with magick at a VERY early age, 6 to be exact and ahve been going strong ever since....Intro duce her to dreams and wha they mean, that's a good start too. Different stones and their properties might be okay as well. Scott Cunninghm's book (either Earth magic or earth air fire and water) has instructions for making a "bag of seven stones"..That could be neat for a 10 yr old....But I'd be very wary of introducing her to any type of ritual magick at this point as most 10 yr old minds aren't formed enough to grasp concepts such as religion and alternate dimensions of reality....
Stay with the safe and simple stuff, make a game out of it and as she progresses in age and experience, you can teach her more!!
And oh yes....Secrecy is a MUST!!!

Maybe you should try teaching it in parts...in my experience most young people don't have the patience to learn meditation or grounding sufficiently to do magick easily.......so teach her meditation first, with the goal of being able to focus on a single image without yielding to any distractions for 20 minutes; then teach her the meditation called 'grounding'.......

If she can learn meditation and grounding, next would be sitting near a plant or tree and merging with it.

If nothing else, these activities will keep her busy for about 6 months, and if she can't learn them, she can't really get anything out of more spontaneous forms,, but if she does learn them, she will have proved her devotion, and then you should go into the history and theory of magick, why it works, how each set of symbols might not work for everyone the same way, etc. Meanwhile, find out how her parents feel about the subject - - - you shouldn't really start any kinds of problems in their household, remember 'harm none'?

Using magick is no more and no less a matter of responsibility than using technology.....

Hi! I am considered an expert on the Wiccan religion on AllExperts.com. My Wiccan name is WhiteRaven. I have been an initiated witch for 15 years.

In regard to your question, I normally would say that you have to be careful in teaching young children or even young adults about Wicca. And the main reason is, that very young children do not have the logical abilities as of yet to determine what their life path should be.

However, having said that, since your young cousin already is expressing an interest in magic anyway, I think it would be alright to show her a few things, but I wouldn't teach her anything about the religious aspect as of yet, except maybe the idea of deity, God and Goddess, things like that.

In a nutshell, just be careful not to overload them with too much info. They can't handle but only a certain amount. And also, keep in mind that as many young children are still living in a magical universe anyway, make sure that they understand that this is different from what happens in cartoons and things like that.

Hope this helps. And if you need any more info or if I can be of help, look me up under Allexperts.com. I'm there under the Wiccan category, name WhiteRaven.

Blessed be,

Larry

Please, do not do such a thing without explicit permission, in writing, from her parents. You can be hauled into court.

Since titles are being used here to raise authenticity and I do not wnat problems that seem evident. I will use mine.

I am Terry, an Elder and Librarian of The Lore. Some might know me about this place, as once I created the web site named Pagan Files Archive that covered the knowledge of almost all religions--with an emphasis on those falling under the umberalla name of Pagan.

I think it's a bad idea to do so. She's a kid. That means her mental faculties aren't really up to determining what she should do and what she shouldn't. Kids can be really nasty to each other and putting magick in the hands of a 10 year old is like giving them a smoking gun to get back at all the other kids they might be annoyed with.

Get this book...

Circle Round

Also, maybe teach some meditation techniques.

I would not recommend teaching spells. Tell her that's something special young women need to wait to learn until after their first menses... just an idea. That also makes that occation something to look forward to instead of fear as well.

Teach her about the moon cycles and what they mean, the seasons/sabbats and what they mean. There is so much ground work to learn before actually spell work.

sweetie, charms and spells are NOT entertainment. There is a lot of things you need to be aware of....does she know anything about the religion itself? that is where you HAVE to start in teachings. Think about this: if you where christian and wanted to become a preacher, no one would put in you in a church to hold cermon until you have gone to school and studied many many years, first. it's ok for you to teach her, but spells and such are not childsplay! NEVER EVER!!!!! Do you have a proper altar? Did you bless the house? Please, do not mess with any of this.Read books and get educated, first.

blessed be.

People should be alowed to be who they want to be, if she wants to learn and be a magick user, whats the hold up. I speak in her views when i say, pleeaase oh pleeaase teach her.LOL

Blessed be!!!!

You didn't get any answers so you asked the same question in a differnt category? Stick to the dragons and make her swear an oath to the coven.

I think her not telling her parents anything about it makes it wrong considering she 10 and they are responsibly for her.
I have nothing against your beliefs with regards to witches etc, but no never make a child do things without a parents knowledge and if you feel she isnt telling them, then you should be.
