Not yet. We will be once our demands outstrip our resources. Then it will be like the Dark Ages in Europe when many will die from pestilence and war. After that, there will be more resources available per person than there has been in a long time. There will be what can only be considered a new Renaissance.

This question is really too deep to answer.
Society has been in meltdown, as you call it, from day 1 of the planet, simply because society is made up of frail human beings.
Humans are frail things with not that much discipline.

...and I think that I have given you a crap answer, for which I apologise.
