They do it in the hope that you will be daft enough to buy it anyhow, so annoying, I purposely keep asking the assistant how much things are so they have to go check but its also just to annoy them too.

Not using individual price tags means that they can change the price automatically by resetting the till scanner's computer. It also saves a lot of time, which can mean fewer employees.
Newsagents are high-turnover with a relatively small mark-up, so they'll be looking for ways to cut their costs.
And some retailers will certainly exploit the situation by mis-shelving or otherwise making the shelf-price stickers misleading or confusing.

Just be really difficult. Pick up as many items that you can carry, take them to the till and ask them for the price of each item. Then when they have given you the price, look aghast at their prices and walk out of the shop and tell them no thank you LOL

As a shop keeper of that kind of shop, let me tell you, shops HAVE to put prices on or mark the shelf so that the price is obvious before the item is taken to the till. If not they can get in trouble w trading standards office at your local council.

That is why they do not put the prices on them so they can rip you off, it is the same with books now, it is very hard to find out the price of them and you end up paying a lot of money for a book which you probably would not have bought if you had known the price earlier.

The answers in the question (many shops overcharge for these items). They make up the price based on your appearance.

things are ridiculously expensive. They want you to come up to them and ask
so that they can shock you with the REAL amount :O
and laugh behind ur back when u buy it.
OR they change the price accordin to the person WHO is you thinkin of buying it..
eg if u were a tourist - they know somehow
and charge u WAY MORE!

They make it up as they go along. Especially with small stuff, like sweets, cans of coke etc, if you buy a load of them, you will pay whatever they ring up without even checking. The other thing, of course is that kids love sweets - kids buy sweets - and kids generally do not know how much they cost (Cos we parents normally buy them), so will automatically pay the dear old trusted shopkeeper whatever he says.
I agree - things should be clearly priced.

The answer to your question is stated within your question! It is so the shops can charge more money and gauge the consumer for the convience of the item rather than them going all the way into Wallmart and seeking out the same thing for cheaper.

i work at a jewelery store, and we have to hide the prices. this is due to many things, such as sales the customer might not know about, plus if they can't see the price that means that they need our help in purchasing, which gives us time to work in the sales and benefits as well as get to know and help our customer. Not only that, but if the customer based what they want on the price rather than quality, then we'd never sell anything!

Cos they are too lazy to price the items. I think it should be a legal requirement for shops to have items priced.
