It really depends on the fan's personal style. In these last few years, fashion has taken quite a turn. Now, the "trends" are what celebrities are wearing, but each one has her own unique taste.
A lot of people are currently into vintage, and Audrey Hepburn is making a second big splash. Eva Longoria is considered an icon, but for more provocative looks. A lot of people are also really into the Jessicas: both Simpson and Alba are making a splash. Big teenage and young adult icons are Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, and Ashley Tisdale. These acresses are among the trendiest for young people.
In general, there is not going to be one good answer to the question. A million different women with a million different styles will give you hundreds of different people who "lead the way." It's really become a matter of personal preference.

I have to say it's Kate Moss who leads the way in fashion, there is always high demand for any of the clothes she is seen wearing. although I personally don't think she looks or dresses very good at the moment, she has seen better days. I prefer Kelly Osborne, she has a quirky style and has a natural, healthy figure.

Personally i love what Scarlett Johansen wears. She's very classic. Also Sienna Miller has a very cute style. Very chic. Uma Thurmans and Kiera Knightley.
As for those who think Americans are all fat, that hasnt anything to do with a fashion leader. Look at camryn Manhein (look at link below). She has beautiful outfits on the red carpet.
P.S. Unless you are model thin and everyone in your extended family is of a healthy size, you should not be the first to speak negatively about others.

At the moment Kate Moss is very influential and a lot of what she wears is picked up the High Street eg. boyfriend jeans. But I think that its not a celebrity (as such) who is the most influential, but a stylist called Rachel Zoe. She is responsible for the skinny jeans, big shades, oversize bag look favoured by loads of women. She dresses Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Kira Knightly - basically all the young fashionistas. What she says, pretty much goes in the fashion world right now.

I think Jessica Alba is a great fashion icon she always looks amazing in whatever she wears. Gwen Stefani is another amazing fasion icon she has a really unique style and its amazing how she comes up with new ideas.

Right now it is kinda anything goes. I guess we are just around the corner from the next hollyweird trend. Like the old Jennifer hair or the Nicole Richie huge sunglasses. Hope the super skinny trend doesn't stick around. It can be so dangerous to so many people.
