keys to writing a good application letter also know as a cover letter. Used to accompy the resume for a posted postion one is applying for.

The applicalication letter is essentially a sales letter in which you mraket your skills, abiliities and knowledge. The application letter should be persuasive. A successful applicaion letter accomplishes four tasks
(1) it catches the readers attention favorably
(2) it explains which particular job interests you and why
(3) it convinces the reader that you are qualified for the job by drawing your reader's attention to particular elements in your resume
(4) it requests and interview

provide context and shou your enthusiasm
1. Indicate how you learned of the open position
2. state your job objective and mention the specific job title
3. explain why you are intrested in the open position or job available.

Central paragraphs
these are the second and third paragraphs

for example the second paragraph may focus on work experience and the third paragraph may foucs on educational background. Come across as proud of your achievments and refer to your enclosed resume.

Closining paragraph
In the final paragraph request an interview, let the reader know when you are available, include your phone numbers, email address and end with a statement of goodwill even if only thank you.
Be sure to proofread your letter very carefully for any errors. Any errors may eliminate you for consideration immediately.
I hope this is helpful good luck to you and God bless

The job application letter's sole purpose is to get the recipient to read your CV. It should be clear, concise and straight to the point. Here you are simply telling the employer that you are worth having a look at.

The application letter should be brief, no more than one page in length. It should be easy to read and flow through. It should include only the absolute necessary information. Like most other things, there is a formula that works extremely well for preparing job application letters.

How to Write a Job Application
by Eric Schulman
Charlottesville, Virginia

Abstract

Applying for jobs occupies a significant amount of time for recent PhDs, yet they receive little or no guidance on how to secure positions that are commensurate with their interests and talents. In this paper we propose a solution to this important problem.

Introduction

In order for recent PhDs to write good applications for appropriate jobs, they must first be completely discouraged from applying for inappropriate jobs. This tends to happen after about the sixtieth rejection letter:
Thank you for applying for our faculty position. It is my unfortunate duty to relate that, though your credentials are interesting, we will not be considering your application further. We wish you success in securing a position commensurate with your interests and talents.

Conclusion

Applications such as the one shown above are relatively simple to write, yet the odds of getting the job are quite good (typically 70-95% instead of the 0.5-2% rate more characteristic of academic jobs). In such a position, recent PhDs can make new friends, receive great pay and benefits, have a work schedule that fits their needs, have opportunities for promotion and career growth, learn new and different skills, interact with a diverse group of people, and contribute to the success of an industry leader. It's time for universities to stop training their graduate students for the academic jobs that only a few will receive, and start preparing them for the careers that most PhDs will enter after graduation.
