There are several ways to remove something. Two of them are more common though.
1) This is one of the common ways. You use Add/Remove programs to remove the stuff that you don't want. You should always use this first before you try to delete things some other way.

2) This is another common way. If you don't see what you want to delete in Add/Remove Programs, you just go to the folders/files that you want to delete. Select the folders/files and hit delete.

3) Judging by what you wrote, seems like you got some kind of spyware type of thing. To remove this kind of thing, you need to go to the registry or download some kind of remover. If you do decide to delete it in the registry though, be very careful because registry is the brain to your computer. If you mess it up, you may as well buy a new computer.

Do you mean that the icon is still on your desktop after you have uninstalled the program? I think you have uninstalled the program but the shortcut is still there, right? Then you should right click the icon and then click 'delete' when the small white box appears. I had this problem before. Hope this helps.

Usually, even after I uninstall something, it still is hiding somewhere on my computer, I always go to add/remove programs, that uninstalls it, but still it is hiding, so I search, find it, & delete it, then the only way, it would come back, is if I re-installed it again.

What is the "something" you refer ? It will be easier to help you if we know what it is.
--------------
You may try to uninstall by going to control panel>>add/remove programs>> choose the application you would like to remove (if available on the list). Otherwise, try to uninstall by its uninstall file (usually in its direction or windows' direction).

*** This works for "nice" application, but not for "mean" application (adware, malware or some hard-uninstall ones)

.
You've been hi-jacked.
In such cases even Add/Remove Programs doesn't work...

This tool does:
1. Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
and download free removal tool
2. Then right click on the program (or any program you no longer want) on your pc > and select Reboot on Next Startup
3. Then restart your computer.

Unwanted program now all gone!

Certain things.. like `IE' cannot be uninstalled.. they are tightly docked with the O/S. Mind giving more details about what you are trying to uninstall.. chances are that the programme might have uninstalled, but the shortcut has not.. please give more details.. thanks
