OHyeah....I've heard this referred to as "slactivism"---- buying a doodad and displaying it will magically make things all better and show you are on the Right Side and A Nice Person Who Supports/Cares.....

Let's face it: when you buy these things, how much of the money that you spend actually GOES towards the purpose or goal, versus paying the manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer? Wouldn't it be a lot more cost-efficient to just send a check to the charity/cause in question? And perhaps a little less, well, boastful?

Think a lot (not all, but a lot!) of this display behavior is "me-tooism", and a cheap way for folks to feel good without having to actually commit something significant (like volunteer hours, special skills, or real money), but that may just be my cynicism showing.

I completely agree with you- I saw one the other day that says "Support pet adoption"- my friend says that he was going to make one thats brown and says "I took a crap today!"- i think its funny, but its also crazy at how many they are coming up with. Also, its kind of like the jesus fish you see on a lot of cars- if you turn the ribbons sideways, its virtually the same shape as the jesus fish. Just some minor observations.

Yes, I know what you mean! So I decided to wear a rainbow ribbon to support all causes, now I get people thinking it's a Gay Pride thing! I give up!!

Yes, I agree. Some of them don't catch on that well. The main one I see is yellow for the troops. Don't see many red ribbons on cars, though.

Oh, pink for breast cancer. I see an awful lot of those on cars. I guess it's considered ok to have breast cancer of be a soldier.

There's way too many of them. What people don't realize is that the more there is of something, the less people will notice them.

What's so confusing? They are just there to make money for someone, unfortunately the money almost never see's the cause they are promoting!
