I don't think so. The top women tennis players have shifted from a finesse-type game to a more power-oriented type since the emergence of the Williams sisters. Hingis was dominant in her time during the 90's because her consistency was good enough to win tournaments. When the power game came into effect, these players have been able to figure out how to handle finesse-type players like Hingis.
In my honest opinion, the reason why she initially "retired" was because she couldn't handle the power-game of the Williams sisters. She still hasn't found ways to be these types of players and she won't reach #1 unless she figures out a way to beat them.
I definitely think she is capable of being a Top 10 player, but with the power games of the Williams and the Sharapovas of women's tennis, Hingis will never make it back to #1.
The same analogy can be made for Lleyton Hewitt on the men's side.

Unfortuantely, Martina will more than likely never reach number one again. She'll more than likely be able to crack top 5, but not number one. That spot is mainly reserved for Mauresmo, Sharapova, and Henin-Hardenne. Now, she has done an amazing job this year from going into her second tournament unranked (not unseeded...there's a difference) And by the time she got to the Australian Open, she was 349. So, she definatlely still has her game but, like then, her game is too...weak. She just cannot hit among the best today. Her serve is too weak, but, she does have excellent groundstrokes and is a very technical player I believe!

She's as bad as Barry Bonds. Blames her problems on someone else. She couldn't take the "power players" (up and coming Williams sisters, her cheap drop shots didn't work with these girls, she had to find a way out, so she blamed her shoe sponser and went off to date a popular golfer. She dragged him down just like Brooke Shields dragged down A. Agassi. Andre is married to another tennis player with 2 kids and he's retired and happy now. Hingis is trying to make a comeback; Excuse me, I never liked her anyway, she got too far, too fast, and she expected too much. Her mother had to drag her back on the court when she lost at Wimbledon. NOT A GOOD SPORT! Look at her idol instead, Martina Navratolova, now she is a real champion!

she is done sure top 5 but no not #1, amelie, justine, sharapova and clijsters and when serena and venus are actually healthy too much of a problem.
martina as well as elena both need to work on there second serve. when Sugiyama (who i luv) beat martina at wimbledon that was an example. i think that when that happened it showed that hingis needed to work harder. Sure i luv hingis but no i see JHH and Sharapova having a rivalry for a while.

Well I guess sadly, its not going to happen. I still think that she is a great player and will make it and stay in the top 10 for some time. Having said that I think that nothing is impossible for her. I have seen her kick Shapapova's butt a few months ago and so I think that she can at least give the tops a run for their money.

Martina has the brain but her body is not as strong and as young as some of the Russian players. She would make a marvelous #1, but it is not likely to happen. Still "bon courage Martina!"

She will remain in the top ten at most times but there is a very slim chance of her reaching number 1. I hope she proves me wrong. Nobody will be more happier than me.

i guess she will not reach the world no.1 unless her opponents are all having off days and she can improve her serve and power.but with her and other players recent form, the best she can be is world no.3!=p but she still has time to prove us wrong though, she's still 26 years old anyway.
