I have about 1500 pics stored on my computer, and I wanted to back them up on a disc for long term storage. Most of these pictures are not printed out, but are very important to me. I want to make sure the CD lasts many many years. I have heard that some CD-R's only last 5 years or so. Any Suggestions?

I don't think there are any writable CD's on the market today that I would trust my pictures and digital movies to. Tape backup is really still the best way at this time, but not everyone has access to a good tape backup drive. I have made my picture libraries redundant. I have bought 2 external hard drives. I keep one at home and one at work (or you could keep one at a friend's house). If one dies, I can buy another one and copy the entire good drive to the new one. If my house or my office were to burn down, I would still have an undamaged one to restore from. I figure that as these drives keep getting cheaper and bigger, I'll be upgrading every few years anyway, and I'll always have my pictures on a fairly new drive. Eventually, someone will come out with a truly long lasting removable media, and at that time, I'll copy my stuff to it and put it in a safe deposit box.
Yea, this cost me about $100 for each drive, but how much have I saved in photo development costs in the past several years? and how much are the pictures of my kids worth to me?

A warning about flash drives. They actually use a tiny non-replacable battery that will eventually die (Around 10 years from what I've read). So don't expect to be able to put one in a safe for your grandkids to look at in 50 years.

The Maxtor Company released a new brand of external hard disk with USB output. It is the best option for your purpose that I think.
There are other features that you can go over it if you browse www.maxtor.com .
