We had a HP pc many years ago - I'd never trust them again (But there printers are absolutely exceptional quality).

Our HP used a OEM operating system. This meant that it was a customised version of windows which of course meant that they also installed their own custom software etc. At bootup the system resources would normally be 45% available - Very low. It would crash every 30 - 60 minutes and wasn't really very stable at all.

HP's tech support (UK - Some scottish guy called Alan) was very hard to deal with too. Not only did he refuse to beleive what I told him it said on my screen, but when the PC-World technician spoke to him he had the same attitude-packed response too. Basically once they have sold you their HP Pc, they don't want to know, they don't care and they don't want to even see the machine again.

At 11 months old, that PC went back to PC world (after 3 motherboard replacements, 2 different lots of ram, new processor etc etc). They refunded it and sent it back to HP (I wish I could of seen Alan's face when he saw what was wrong with it).

Our experience with HP was not a good one at all. They don't beleive that anything can go wrong with their PC's and they don't beleive that they are anything but perfect. Their customer service was appalling along with very unhelpful.

I will neer touch another HP pc again. As I said though, their printers are perfect in every way - robust, very little ink usage, pretty quick etc (unlike Epson).

If you want to buy a good brand-name PC, then I would recommend Packard Bell. We had one of those after the HP, and to be honest it was almost faultless. Eventually the motherboard (after a good 5 years of solid use) died but it was a great machine which operated almost flawlessly.

The reason why I dislike HP computers, well they are ok now and I would recomend people to use them, as HP, DELL, Compaq and all the other computers has there own "aditional software" installed. This means that the computers way back in the day were sluggish and not preforming very well.

I still have my computer from 5 years ago and... actually it is the one im using right now. I remember when I was working at the forums everyone complained about how slow HP was and there computer had alot of issues, Second worst was Gateway, followed by Dell. I swore I would never buy from them. Nowadays the comptuers have the processor and RAM to handel "there applications"

I remember when my Computer (no name brand) Was preforming faster then HP and Gateway, Dell was sort of getting better. For the aditional 2-3 years I had it. Mine cost $1000 (64MB RAM 500mhz Celeron.) After that the computers did better with 256MB RAM and when Intel released its first 1ghz processor speed. Now my computer isn't faster then any computer out there and the sytem specs will make anyone go... Why don't you buy a new one even the cheap ones are better now.

Just from my experience, If you told me 3 years ago to buy Dell, Gateway, or HP I would say NO.

Have I used those computer personally instead of hearing people complain? Yes. Schools and friends ask me to troubleshoot and there computer took forever to load. I remember one had 128MB RAM and 700mhz CPU and My computer was faster. He didn't have anything on it either! He just needed me to remove a virus.

But now adays with system hardware and there upgrade of motehrboards they are able to take the 'additional" software that the companies provide.

*Making your own computer isn't expensive, it was the Microsoft Software that will kill you.

way back when, you could only run HP on HP, so if you got something from anyone else, you couldnt use it. i cant remember the word im looking for, but it was a big hassle to not be able to go back and forth between two different computer systems. thats why now the only real difference is between mac and windows and to a small degree linux. brand name doesnt matter much anymore since most systems run windows nowadays. btw, compaq is owned by HP.
