hope is the surrendering of your wish and waiting for whatever comes along.

Why would I want to prove you wrong when you're saying exactly the same thing I've been telling people this whole time?

i.e. I can't prove you wrong if you're right, and I agree it and know full well that you are.

Okokok.... if I'm going to try and be pedantic, I'll say this much: Objectively... hope is nothing. SUBJECTIVELY however.... hope is a means of getting people to do things which they should know better than to engage in.... i.e. getting them to repeat their stupid mistakes despite the negative consequences the last time they tried it. Its idiocy.... but sometimes it gets things done because random chance could result in failure the first time and success the next..... and there isn't always a way of knowing when randomness is strongly involved.

Aside from that though..... hope is nothing.

[Message for "Madmen": Are you aware of the irony of suggesting objectively that those who deal in absolutes are wrong? While I'm inclined to agree with you on that point, it is important to remember that said statement is not necessarily an exception to that rule.]

Hope may mean nothing to you but that is your opinion.

It is the basis for each day that I live. The hope that my children will take what I have taught them for what it is. Hope that my efforts in the world will make a difference to someone.

There ARE people who are not only looking out for what they can get out of life, but how they can impact the people around them for the better. And it is HOPE that encourages them.

It is true that hope has no place in economics, which seem to rule out world. You can not place a dollar value to it. You recieve no credit for hoping to pay a debt.

But without hope we trudge along in our daily shuffle to what point and purpose?

When you get discouraged by something, what gets you to the point of trying again? HOPE! You think and you hope and you try to do better.

If hope is a made up nothing that is only meant to make people feel better about the world, so be it. It gets me through the day.

We all live, we all die. In a hundred years, few or none will remember you, or me, or what we did. So what is the point?

Biology? Passing genetics? Knowledge? Money? You pass these things on with the HOPE they will matter to someone.

Depends on what you hope for. HOPE as a vague generality may not exist because you haven't really defined it. If I hope for a new job that is something more concrete that I can work towards and get. It just depends on your situation and outlook. For you hope may not be, but for others it can.
But just hope as in hope for "world peace" or a "better life" well, that's really debatable. If you say there is no hope or expectation for a better life, this is constantly being proved wrong because there are people out there who HAVE made their life better.
If speaking corporately about humanity, there's nothing that says we can't make ourselves better, in fact the use of eugenics and evolution proves this.

I will help you to understand HOPE. Hope, as I define it, is a desire for something to occur. Example: You are expecting a child. You HOPE the child is born Healthy. You don't smoke or take drugs...you watch your life style. The Hope has a great chance of becoming REALITY. Second example: You Hope you arrive safely in an auto trip. You drive while rested, the auto is well maintained, you wear your seat belt. You drive under control. Your HOPE has a good chance of becoming Reality. Without Hope there is no direction to take, no order to follow. No one can ever prove you either right or wrong....risk takers have a less chance of attaining the HOPE that they desire....Example: a Climber uses a "Frayed" rope in a climb. He or she HOPES that the rope will not fail....any wagers;)

you are only mistaken in using the phrase, "in the world we live in today".
hope never was anything other than an illusory concept which has acted as a defence mechanism.
instead what we need is actual experience of another way which will leave us in no doubt of the value of life and its' continuance in increasingly developed wholeness.

Why do we need to prove you wrong? You need to offer some support of your own or your point is moot anyway. Tell me when you've got some, so I can prove it wrong.

You call it hope, and not certainty. Hope is by definition unprovable.
