Yes Clarks shoe shop did it and so did Timsons, I thought I was getting some really cool shoes the first time I had my feet measured and all I ended up with were those horrible black lace up shoes by Tuff, don't know if you remember them, I scrapped mine all the way to school and back for weeks to try and wear them out, no wonder they were called Tuff shoes damn things lasted for an eternity.

The type you are talking about are still in use. I remember when I was a child, boy I've got a good memory, that there was a cabinet like box with a slot across the bottom. You stood on the platform at the front with your feet in the slot and looked in an aperture at the top. You could see your feet inside the shoes. It was like a green x-ray picture. No wonder I glow in the dark.

THE FOOT CRUSHER!!! DUM DUM DUM (scary music etc etc)

The shoe shop was Clark's! I used to go there as a kid too and then ended up working there whilst at uni. The machines are really efficient now and work on a temperature detector or something like that. The kids still cry on about it just the same.

Yup - Clark's shoe shop at Charing Cross in Glasgow circa 1956. It was an x-ray machine (deadly and would be totally banned now)! The assistant looked though a special 'thing' and could see your feet inside your shoe! Then the thing you described would happen and 'Hey Presto!!' - shoe size. I'd forgotten all about that. Thanks!

Yes, and believe it or not we used to get an x-ray to show how our feet fit in the shoes!

You would step into this box and an x-ray image of your feet would appear on a screen so Mom could be sure there was plenty of room to grow into!

Yes I do, sensible shoe shops ( like Clarke's boo, hiss) had them. It was the best part of shoe shopping

Yes i remember and they still have them. Took my daughters last month for new winter shoes at Stead and Simpson and they thought it was great! (on a Clarks boycott at the mo, they are rubbish!)

They still have them. My son has been waiting to get on it, but he had not yet been able to as they only measure from size 10.
