Keeping it directly off the ground will keep water from soaking up into it, like when snow builds around a pile. You won't end up with rottin wood on the bottom of your stack, causing weaknesses.

I don't know the true answer but I do know why we did that. We did that with our firewood so that the rain water didn't get to it and cause it to slowly rot and so that termites couldnt get to it as easily.

For one the ground tends to get wet. for another if it's on the ground you get bugs and animals living in it. The last thing you want to see coming out of your fire on a cold day is a snake or a mouse!

makes no difference if it is used super quickly but the chances are when it gets low you will get more and put it on top the ground holds moisture and rots the wood will attract termites

To keep it dry. Burning wet wood is nearly impossible.

To keep it dry ,It will soak in moisture from the ground and it wont burn.

so moisture from the ground doesn't get top your wood, if it's damp it doesn't burn as well.
