Uruguay were chosen as hosts for the first World Cup because they won the Olympics event two years before. Home advantage and maybe biased refereeing back then probably helped contribute to their win.

Anyway, the score in the final was Uruguay 4 Argentina 2.

Uruguay hosted the first world cup but it really wasn't a real 'World Cup'. No teams from Europe travelled to the tourney because there weren't any commercial airlines. They would have had to travel for two (2) weeks by boat, both ways.

That is not to say that Uruguay wouldn't have won even if the teams were there.

Uruguay won the first world cup at home but also won the Olympics 2 years earlier. They have also won against Brazil in the Maracana. The first time they have lost was in 1954 in the semi-finals of the World Cup against Hungary (4-2) after extra time.
