Corey C asked: Will the Red Sox make a bid for a slanty eyed pitcher from Japan?
Is this a racist question?

This is just an opinion question. I'm not asking it to be stupid

Absolutely! Anytime someone refers to another based on physical appearance due to features inherent to a persons race, color or greed, it is racist. The only feature that should be taken into consideration is whether his fastball is blinding and whether his curve ball drops off the table!!

First off, the guy is probably asking this question because nobody seemed to chastise Corey for asking his question - they just answered it as they would any other. So, I think everyone can lay off this guy.

As for the original question, yes, it's a racist thing to say. I know someone mentioned political correctness, but come on - how would anyone here feel if I asked whether the Marlins should trade their big-lipped black pitcher? That's not political incorrectness - it's racism, plain and simple. I'm guessing that Corey didn't mean it in a racist way, but the words "slanty eyed" had no business being there.

Of course it's racist. The majority of the world when thinking of a person of asian decent would naturally think of certain distinguishing facial features that non-asians might not possess. So to include that "description" into that statement should be considered racist in my opinion. Matsuzaka is a pitcher, no matter where he is from, AND THE RED SOX NEED ALL THE HELP THEY CAN GET TO STOP THE BOMBERS. GO YANKEES!

no that is like me asking a bout a pigentoed latino. it would be racist if you asked why are all japenese players slantyeyed. you where adressing some one by a trait. or if i where to say the tall fast man from kenya. they are traits that we think of because thats what we notice. most asians do have narower eyes than other races and people from kenya and other parts of afraca do tend to be taller and faster, want proof look at the NBA and the marathons.

What I don't understand is why there are so many negative votes against this remark as being racist. Of course it's a racist remark. It 's wrong and the Corey C asshole should be called on the carpet for it.

It's racist because you had to include "slanty eyed" instead of just saying pitcher.

The way you put it, yes, it is racist and so are the Red Sox so I
don't think you'll have to worry about it. Boston was the last team
to have a Black Player in Elijah "Pumpsie" Green.

I think it depends on who you ask. African Americans call each other ******* and that is OK. White people call each other Crackers and Honkies and that is ok. Mexicans call each other beaners and thats OK. I feel once you get to the media that they have to stay politically correct because the are crossing over to all races. Is it fair? NO but what are we to do.

"slanty eyed" is offensive. Referring the the person in question as "Japanese" or "Asian" changes the whole demeanor of the question and makes it appropriate.
