Some brides not only take their husband's name but, his testicles too. And some go even further and take everything he owns later on.

It's become traditional, but used to mean that once the bride was married, she became the property of her husband, therefore taking his last name as well. Now it's just more convenient to take the last name of the husband, though many women are breaking tradition and either keeping their last names, hyphenating their maiden name with the name of their husband, or in rare cases both the groom and the bride take on the last name of the bride.

In many cultures and religions, women keep their maiden name after marriage. The Arab and Muslim women keep their maiden names.

It is tradition in Western Society. As someone else has pointed out in other cultures women keep their maiden name.
By the way in he province of Quebec in Canada women must keep their maiden names.(at least since the last 15 or 20 years) In social situations they may use their husband's last name but all official documents such as health cards, drrver's licence and passports bear their maiden names. The children usually get the last name of the husband.
In Ontario women have a choice to keep their own name or take their husband's name or hyphenate it. More and more women keep their own name. I don't know about the other provinces in Canada.
I believe Americans are more traditional still.

It is a matter of tradition. But the real question is "should a bride change her name when she gets married?" If you need more details please see the following links:

yes women were considered property of there husbands, before a girl was married she would belong to her father and then he "gives her away" to her husband, it is also a sign of unity, that you are one, and a family
