not a lot really. they take your blood pressure. they do ask for your reasons for wantin to go on it. like contraception, or for regulating periods, or for skin. I said everything! They just check your health history and things to make sure you're fit to go on it. Then they will explain how it all works etc to you.
It's nothing to worry about.

Well if you ahven't already been for a complete check-up then you will probably have to go for one. When I first wanted to go on the pill, my Dr. made me go for a complete check-up. All they do is ask your medical history and your familie's....if you know it. They will take your blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar level, and your weight, and height. The physical part is the breast exam and the pap test and internal exam. My doctor would not give me the pill for the first time without all of this. And the prescription was only good for a year, so when the year was up I had to make another appointment for another complete check-up. I really didn't like this at all. Then when I went for my second complete check-up the pap test came back as abnormal. I had abnormal cells and had to get laser surgery on my cervix. If I didn't go see my Dr. for the complete check-up when I did I could have got cervix cancer. I now ALWAYS go see my Dr. every year for a complete check-up, whether I want the birth control pill or not. As for questions they ask there really isn't a lot. They might ask you how many partners you have had and ask if you want STD tests done if there is any reason to. Otherwise for me anyway it was all in the complete chech-up.

Good Luck :)

They should take a full health history if they don't know you. They really need to check that you have no history of clots or vascular disease, epilepsy or anything else that can affect the pill or interact with it. They really should inform you of all kinds of contraception available and help you decide on the best option for you.they will ask if you take any medication. Antibiotics make the pill ineffective and that is how many pregnancies occur for people taking it. they should check your weight and blood pressure before prescribing it also.

He will ask
- age of first period
- questions about your cycle such as irregularities, pain, heaviness of flow, duration
- reasons for taking the pill
- if you're currently sexually active, and for how long you have been having sex (this one not always, though)
- if you are in a steady relationship at the moment
- if you smoke
- how much exercise you're getting (this one also not always)
- if there's a history of breast, ovarian or endometrial cancer in your family
- if you have problems with blood pressure or if you have any varicose veins
- whether you've taken the pill before
- depending on how old you are, if you plan to use the pill as a long-term contraceptive device or if you plan to switch to something else

He will also do a vaginal exam and feel your breasts. If you want to start taking the pill, my advice is that you should quit smoking if you are a smoker. This can really cause some bad problems and side effects, trust me.

Crikey Dolphin lady you went through some tests! My doc just checked my blood pressure and that was it. i did start taking it after I had a baby though so it wasn't a proper check up but it's only simple questions and everyone I know who is on the pill didn't have any examinations what so ever.

if you're worried about being embarrased dont be, the doctor will have seen and heard everything. If you cant face your GP go to a contraception clinic. they'll ask if you smoke, how much do you drink, they'll take your blood pressure. They are not interested in your personal business just keeping you healthy. They might recommend barrier contraception to keep you safe. That's about it. Dont worry, its far more sensible to get the pill than not.

Basic questions -do you have any allergies? Do you have any preferences? What is your priorities in birth control (to help control menstrual pain, to avoid pregnancy with as little side effects as possible etc) Do you know what your insurance may or may not cover? Mostly the kind of stuff any doctor would ask as they try to find the right medication for you.

one of the main questions will be are you currently having sex and how old is your partner. i have just taken my niece to be put on the pill and although she is under age i would rather this than her come home to me and say she is pregnant. if you are underage and your partner over 16 then you have to be careful telling the dr his age as it can sometimes open up a can of worms as the dr we saw asked this question and we said 15 because of legal reasons. our dr told us about the pill and the injections. we made our decision there and then and my niece was put on a pill called celeste. but please remember that even though you may go on the pill your partner will still have to wear a condom as it only protects 99% or there abouts on pregnancies it doesn't protect against stds. They will also weigh you, take your blood pressure and ask if you smoke. It may be wise to take someone with you if you are underage hun.
