I've never seen Alien, but I've seen its sequel Aliens (which can be a bit violent and scary though I think for some), but there's a really good site called www.kids-in-mind.com. If you've never seen the movie yourself and don't know what to expect, this site gives a list of what could be violent or scary or objectionable material in a movie. After reading the description, you should be able to make a sound judgement.

There are a few icky alien gross scenes. Some violence. But no nudity etc. My kids have been watching the Alien movies since they were 12 or so. I always watch a movie first if I am concerned about it, but I saw Alien and Aliens when I was a teenager (I'm 40 now) so judge the ratings accordingly. Something that was an 'R' back in the dark ages of my youth would be a PG or PG13 today.

Hope that helps.

Jen

Edit: P.S. AlienS is much better than Alien. That's a personal choice. Even though Tom Skerrit is in Alien and I LOVE Tom Skerrit. You don't really need to watch Alien to love AlienS. AlienS has a whole different look and feel, different director makes all the ummm, well difference!

It depends on the children in question and the parents' expectations. Alien is a very suspenseful movie, but it starts a little slow. If your kids have a short attention span, they may lose interest before the action picks up. If they scare easily, it might be too much for them. If you aren't comfortable with your children seeing scenes of violence and gore (the alien in question gestates inside a human host, then bursts out through the host's chest), I wouldn't recommend it. BUT, that having been said, it is an excellent movie. Well-made, intelligent, and exciting. I enjoyed Alien in my early teens and enjoyed Aliens (the sequel) even more in my mid to late teens, and I turned out pretty good.

I don't think they're too young. I have a copy of Alien still on VHS and the age-restriction was pg13?

Anyway, it's not really all it's cracked up to be. It's an awesome movie, don't get me wrong. It's just not so violent and scary. If they were my kids, i'd let them watch it. I'd think they are mature enough and i would not deprive them of witnessing a piece of cinema-history! Hehe.

But it's your choice as a parent, if you've seen the movie yourself you'd know what they'd be letting themselves in for. I say let em watch it.

that's completely up to your own judgement as a parent. i saw that movie for the first time in like 1989, i was like 8 or 9. it freaked me out a little but i was a kid, your kids are older and are pretty much at an age where they can understand it's a movie and not real, so i don't see a problem with it. good luck with the decision!!

I am over 40 and I am still too young. If they like that stuff & you let them play M video games they should be OK. My Mom rule was, you can see an R rated movie, when you are 18 and can get in on your own.

As long as you explain that these movies are not real they should be okay, just be prepared to have a couple of kids jump in your bed in the middle of the night.

I saw it at 10, depends on their development I guess. When I saw it kids were a little tougher skinned than they are today.
