Nature is your hardware. Nuture is your operating system and software. Though nature gets you into the game, nuture will decide how high you get.

I've been hearing this question for over 30 years. Of course, the answer is all based on opinion, since each individual differs. In the end, nevertheless, I've concluded that both play a vital role in human development, yet, once again, depending on the individual, for some nature has a greater impact, while for others nurture has a greater impact. Humans are complex creatures, and depending how on the dice of life are rolled, and whether the person in quesiton, reacts by nature or nurture instincts, will determined the result of the situation.

I was really "into" this kind of question previously years ago..
I really think nature can't fully manifest/genes expressed fully without a good nurture. A good environment that isn't acidic/negative, meaning when a child does an act the reinforcement isn't always a negative reinforcement, then I think there is some hope. Even with a bad environment, children can self-express their given genetics. Specifically, intelligence is a complex trait that can "win out" a bad environment, though too risky to have anyone deliberately test/try!
Nature is also within the prenatal womb. So, Given that after copulation, the right sperm and egg got hooked up and the fetus holds great genes, if the mother smokes, takes any chemicals that produce toxicity, or is mal-nutrtioned (such as lacking folic acid), or if she is very old (and eggs are old), then that potential nature is not going to fully be expressed.
Most scientist, I think, believe in a mix-play of nature and nurture; they definitely depend on each other. One can not exist withOUT the other. But one good and one bad may play out, but not ideally. Two bads will probably result in a still born/aborted fetus, or extremely subpar baby.

Nature.
And here is why in simple terms anyone can understand:
Nurture can make the difference between being a policeman or a criminal.
Nature can make the difference between being a human and a mushroom.
I can't imagine that a person's outlook on life, their beliefs, the clothes they wear, the language they speak nor how healthy they are can really compare to the number of limbs they have, their general bodysize (between microscopic and blue whale), their means of locomotion (if any) etc.
The variety among humans based on upbringing is nothing compared to the biodiversity on this planet.
Get the point?

Neither. Just as you cannot apportion blame you cannot apportion causality. The "nature nurture debate" is a non-sensical debate. In the strictest sense of "non-sensical" it means absolutely nothing. Hold a match. The match has a physical structure - nature. How much flame do you have? None. None at all. Now put the match down and start making "striking movements" (nurture) with your hand. How much flame do you have. None. None at all. Put the two together and strike the physical match and then you will get a flame. Without nurture a person has no destiny. None at all. Zip. zero. Without nature a person has no destiny. None at all. Zip. Zero. A persons destiny is shaped by a combination of their nature and their nurture. It makes no sense to attempt to quantify the contribution of each. Whatsoever.

i believe that how a person thinks has the bigget impact on their destiny. included in how the person thinks includes their opinions of their nature, how they were nurtured and everything else. if the person thinks that nature has a bigger impact on how they turned out, their life will show that and the same for nurture.

Excellent question. I'm going with nature. Because doesn't nature determine the quality of the nurturing? I mean, doesn't nature determine who your parents are and what the community and society and culture you grow up in is like? The Greeks and Romans were belligerent and sexually decadent (by post-modern standards) but they inherited a society where philosophers, priests, temple prostitutes, pedophilia, and exposing infants to death was normal. I think human nature created this society.

Nature....have you ever seen those studies on twins that have been separated at birth....then reunited only to find out that they still have so much in common? I think nurture does, however, have something to do with a persons makeup.

It is your choices that determines your destiny. You may arrive at it because of nature or your nature or you may have that certain destiny because you nurtured "things" to take you there.
