How bad are your issues? I think it would be fine for you to call him/her and say "I sent your birthday present to the wrong address by accident, and it was sent back to me. Since it's already late, would you mind if I sent it along with your christmas present next month?"

Just try to send the christmas present earlier than your normally would. Hopefully, you aren't too estranged that you can't make that phone call.

Explain to your friend that there was a situation mailing the gift and you'll send it out very soon. No need to worry about. Your friend will appreciate the fact that you didn't forget. Do whatever you can to put your mind at ease.
