White gold is NOT pure gold, unlike these people seem to think. Eighteen-carat white gold consists of 75% gold mixed with 25% white metals. New white gold rings are usually coated with a hard protective finish of rhodium, a silver-white metal like platinum. To make gold white, they have to mix it with other white metals so its not pure gold.

Gold in jewelry is always alloyed with other metals because the pure metal is too soft to stand up well. One such alloy is lighter in color than others, and is called white gold. I am not sure what the alloying elements are in it.
