i plan to move to new york in about a year to pursue a music career. i have about one year of guitar playing experience and right now i'm practicing about 4 to 5 hours a day . i would love to be in a band. as a back up plan , i'm becoming a paramedic to have that as a source of income. do i have a (realistic) chance of at least finding bandmates and getting something started? or should i go to a music school and gain some more skills on the guitar?

go to music school. new york is full of people with lots of talent doing lots of things other than what they want. there is not enough jobs for artits of all types to go around. what kind of music? maybe ny is not the place to be...pop seems to be an LA thing...country you go to nashville...also you know NYC is pretty pricey to live in right? yeah its a little unrealistic to think you'll get to nyc and find a band and then some how get discovred. you need to have your band together before hand. and you definatly need to have more than a year of guitar...i know people that have been playing for 15 years and are amazing and they arnt anywhere in the music world other than playing small gigs at local bars...

I hate to burst your bubble, but no it's not a realistic dream. If you only knew how many people move to New York and Nashville to "make it big" you'd be amazed. You might be a very good guitaur player, but especially to move there without a band...not wise. Stick to a normal job, trust me. If you move to New York in a few months you'll be broke and moving back home anyway. Don't waste your time or money. Music business is not easy.

Depends on how much natural talent you have. Personally, I'd worry more about improving your skill than finding bandmates. You put an ad in the paper and you'll find some quite easily. Good luck. And don't forget us little people!

It's easy to be part of a band, they form and re-form all the time. When you get to NYC, just look in the classifieds. As far as making a living at it, you're up against people with a lot more experience and good marketing. If you're really great, you could shop yourself around to agents who could rep you.

Sit down and think it over. Decide what you would prefer to do. Then do that with all your heart.
