I'm doing an argument paper for english, and could use some professional help. Advice and opinions are appreciated, especially from those who are part of the motor companies. Also, anyone who is able to provide any sites with information comparing foreign cars to domestic would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

because they make better cars

It's because the Japanese employ better strategy in building their vehicles.

First of all, they hire the best and the brightest designers and engineers. While GM and FORD were churning out duds like Corsicas and Tempos, the Japanese were turning heads with 300zx, Supra, 3000gt, RX-7, etc.

Secondly, they spend tons of money on engine development. The big three spend more money on such essentials as silk headliners and leather steering wheels while their engines remain gas guzzling dinosaurs. I mean I have a Lexus RX350 that has 270hp but gets 25mpg! And qualifies as LOW EMISSIONS VEHICLE! While you got GM using engines that are decades old that continues to guzzle gas and pollute.

Thirdly, their quality control standards are much higher. I can't tell you how many times I've rented domestics with doors that didn't fit, windows that didn't close all the way, rattled like a spray can, etc.

I once read that domestics spend more per car than the Japanese because they use higher quality materials. I believe it because my Chevy Cavalier was far superior in quality than my Acura Integra. While my Chevy had silk headliner, the Acura had plastic. It had intermittent wipers while the Acura did not. It also had 6 speakers while Acura had 4. The seats were plush and comfortable with higher quality threads while Acura's was hard and uncomfortable. While leaning on my Acura once, the sheet metal got dented. This never happened on the Chevy because they use thicker and more expensive sheet metal. The metallic paint on my Chevy was of great quality, while it was not available on the Acura.

BUT the bottom line is, Acura doesn't rattle, go farther on a tank of gas and run forever while the Chevy is in the shop.

In conclusion, the Japanese strategy was to build good-looking cars that run forever, albeit using cheaper parts..... the Big 3's was to build cars with high quality interior, while the rest of the vehicle remained in the dinosaur age.

It's hard to say what is a "foreign" car and what is a "domestic" car. All cars now contains parts from around the world. Further, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, etc. all have manufacturing facilities in the United States, while GM has manufacturing facilities in Canada and Mexico.

On the whole, the brands traditionally considered "foreign" (such as BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.) are superior to the brands traditionally considered "Domestic" (such as GM, Ford, etc.) because of better engineering, better parts, and better construction.

Take an Infiniti FX35 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee--both are very close in costs--the Infiniti is a shockingly nicer vehicle. It has better interior quality (compare the leather in the two, for example), it rides better, it handles better, it has a more reliable engine.

"Domestic" cars have come a long way in the past ~20 years, but they still fall short of "foreign" cars at the same price point.

Well you certainly touched a nerve with your question.

Assuming you are talking about the number of problems per car as the defining factor for "better": As a whole, European cars have more problems (with Mercedes and Land Rover among the worst) than North American cars and Asian cars have less. This statement is mainly from information published by Consumer Reports magazine. I like CR because its conclusions are based upon continuous surveys of thousands of car owners and it is independent and unbiased. Check it out yourself.

Subjectively, I think Honda/Acura are the best cars in the world for the money. Its powerplant technology IS the best in the world -period.

Many respondents have good information and worthwhile arguments. Use the best from all of them. Good luck.

Foreign cars are no better than a domestic car and most foreign cars are built here in the USA now. Its a personal preference but as long as you maintain the car and do the maitanance, they will last the same and have the same reliability. I sell all brands and its just a preference to the buyer. You can visit motortrend.com or car and driver.com for comparing

Do not be fooled into thinking foreign cars are better.Import manufacturers such as Honda,Toyota,& Nissan just to name a few, have manditory scheduled maintanance terms that have to be fulfilled by the consumer .If these obligations are not completed, all or parts of the warranty will be void. Not all domestics have this policy.

You can thank Bill Clinton and N.A.F.T.A. for the fix the U.S.A. is in now. After signing N.A.F.T.A. into effect it became cheaper for all of our jobs to be done overseas witch crippled our economy and in order to stay in buisness the American companies had to cut costs in order to remain competitive with the foreign companies and because the American companies all have Unions they were unable to cut costs on the labor end of it and had to find other places to save, and unfortunatly that ends up lowering the quality of the matereals that make the cars and trucks and therefore lowering the quality of the doestic vehicles as a whole. It sucks but it is true. Hope I have been helpful.

well i'm not a professional but I know one of the reasons is because in Japan and those countries they don't have Unions. Over there if you don't do your job right you stay overtime and work for free. In alot of countries it is a matter of honor to do your job right. Over here it's about production, piece-work. Therefore they have better quality while the US is about quantity..

i think of that there is not any "greater desirable" vehicle. all of it has to do with the type you look after your vehicle. in case you take care of it like sh!t, it is going to attend to you the comparable (breaking down, and so on). in case you hold the vehicle tuned up and the popular maitenence carried out to it, it is going to final you an prolonged time. My first first vehicle became like some crappy Geo Metro. I hated it so I dealt with it like crap. It broke down in a month. My next vehicle became a Honda Civic, I dealt with it greater desirable. the only subject that became incorrect with it became the alternator went out. From my own adventure, I do desire foreign places automobiles. i admire how Nissans look and run. My modern-day (and maximum suitable vehicle i've got owned ever) is a Subaru Impreza WRX. I shield that vehicle and that's carried out no longer something yet shield me additionally. The AWD is remarkable. i will mob in snow at an analogous time as each and all the FWD and RWD automobiles are spinning out and going sluggish. It gets great gasoline mileage and that's have been given a swifter on it, so it may get up and bypass. i admire how the vehicle seems, too! The profile of the vehicle is mean and the nostril with the interior track on the hood, human beings understand i'm finding for difficulty. wish this sways you!
