have a friend who told me that many years ago her dr was doing a pelvic and nodded to the nurse, who sprayed something. friend says she's been paranoid about "smells" ever since because she thinks it was an air freshener. i asked her if she smelled the air freshener (since it would have been a small exam room) she said no, but still swears thats what it was.

i said i think they spray something on a slide if they were taking a sample to look under a microscope, and that is what the nurse did. do you have any expertise on the issue?

i know my friend would not have gone to the office unless she had done the whole prom queen shower & shave thing, so i just cannot believe her theory is right, but she just doesn't believe me, either. i just hate that she's been paranoid all these years about something that i don't think actually happened.

I don't think that it is common practice to spray if there is a bad smell in a doctor's office. These are trained individuals and part of their training as doctor's is to recognize smells to help diagnose potential problems. On top of that, they have to make sure every patient is comfortable to stop potential lawsuits.

I am not sure exactly what it could be, but next time she goes tell her to ask. There is nothing wrong with asking your doctor what he is doing and why. It's your body, you should know.

Finally, If it was an odor thing the doctor or nurse would have most likely told her about it and gave a script to help alleviate the issue. They are there to help, not ridicule!

No Worries!

It was the fixative sprayed on the slides of the Pap smear. The chemical smells a little like nail polish.

You do not ever need to speak about your clinical issues with the scheduler/receptionist. If you are quite embarrassed, inform them it is private. They haven't any correct to invite you additional questions. But preserve in brain, folks that paintings within the clinical area have heard all of it, so no one is judging you. I additionally doubt your UTI is valued at them wasting their jobs over.
