I've been teaching for 20 years, and the answer to your question is YES!!! The reason they're boring is because the people who choose what goes in them are so out of touch with students today that they have NO IDEA what kids find appealing and can teach concepts at the same time. I quit using textbooks about 15 years ago. I only use a textbook for specific stories, poems, etc. - ones that I KNOW my students will like, can understand (sometimes with a lot of help) and can learn the major concepts from. Guess what??? IT WORKS. Here in West Virginia, teachers don't HAVE to use a textbook at all. Textbooks are considered ONE of the many sources/references we can use to teach. I've made up my own poetry "textbook," teach whatever novels I feel are "good and relevant," and use the textbook for some short stories for a unit.

Textbooks are a necessary evil.

I agree with teacherhelper, textbooks should be used as only part of a lesson, not the whole thing. But on the other hand, I think kids need to get used to reading nonfiction material because it's a skill that most high-paying jobs will require you to have. If you think textbooks are boring, have you ever picked up a Wall Street Journal? How about the legal code that lawyers use? They may not be as exciting as Cosmo or Sports Illustrated, but they're certainly useful. Not to mention you can't get into college without passing the reading sections on the SAT.

As a science teacher I do hands-on labs with the kids, take them outside for field investigations and games, watch videos, and look at interactive websites, but I also make sure to include reading from the textbook as well as sources in every lesson so that the kids can get used to seeing how the topic will look on paper.

Yes and no. Yes they're boring when I'm forced to study compulsory subjects and don't want to, i.e. most of the core classes in high school and many general education classes in college. An exception for me is that I only enjoy them if I like the class, and usually the teacher. For instance, I love my Survey of Child/Adolescent Psychology and the textbook is very interesting for me, but trying to read through this Economics class I'm taking takes a lot of effort because I just read it, but don't have much motivation to try and comprehend it. Good luck with whatever you need these for.
