you can go back as far as you want but once you sign the papers that say the seller sold the house he isnt responsible anymore thats why you have a professional inspect your house for you before you buy. its not a rental so you going around looking at stuff just wont cut it.
so the answer is you can go back as far as you want but the previouse owner is not liable unless of course you have the roof on the original paperwork

Not to sure what an "orior" owner might be, but I would say, zero years. You might have better luck going back to the company who did the roof work, if the original home owner didn't do it themselves.

Local laws vary by state, county, and city. Most real estate dealings fall under "Buyer Beware". That is reason to have any home inspected before you purchase. You might want to call the city hall, ask for the buildings inspection department for some free advice.

If you are renting the house, you don't have to pay the rent until the landlord repairs the roof. Call a lawyer and ask for a copy of the renters rights law in your home town.

Best thing to do is contact the realtor you bought the house through. If you didn't go through a realtor and/or bought it on a land contract type agreement then I would at least contact the law office where you did the closing.

IF YOU JUST HAD A LEAK, I'D YOU'RE SOL, BUT THIS IS EQUIVALENT TO ... BAD CONCRETE, ROTTEN WOOD, OR
INSTALLING A USED APPLIANCE & CALLING IT NEW!

NOT QUITE FRAUD, BUT, IF YOU'RE CORRECT, YOUR ROOF WILL NEVER BE RIGHT!

CIVIL SUIT!
