We have for hundreds of years in the UK had politicians who don't get paid. They sit in the House of Lords, and all they get are expenses.

Of course, many of them are rich, having titles that they inherit through their blood line.

However, these people (like our Royal Family) are from birth instilled with an ethos of public service and the House of Lords has avoided the sort of corruption allegations that our House of Commons has endured over the years.

The Socialists and others see the HoL as undemocratic, which it undoubtedly is, but it is also hugely effective and contains a wealth of talent sadly missing from the HoC. Of course, they want to do away with it, holding democracy up as an ideal.

Unfortunately, democracy throws us Bush x2, Blair, Nixon, Carter, Ford, Reagan; you name them.

There is an old quote that goes (something like) "Anyone who WANTS to be a politician SHOULDN'T be one." How true that is in many cases.

The answer to the question, however, must be that politicians in the US or UK system of Government should be paid - until we find a better way of finding people to rule us.

God Save the Queen (and the House of Lords)!!!

i imagine it could be morally good. yet realistically that would want to teach extraordinarily. human beings hate politicians inspite of what they achieve this that that they had not in any respect get a advance, in all likelihood a decrease. Then no one with any brains would ever run in elections and without be conscious each and every thing will be a significant disaster. the suitable approach will be to attempt to tie the income of representatives to a pair type of metric to degree inflation. That way that that they had continually earn an same fee in genuine worth. i'm no economist so I even do not comprehend if this will be available and if so the way it could be achieved.

They should be paid, but receiving "lobby" money should be a crime. It's just a bribe - plain and simple. I'm also sick of the extravagant expense accounts. Those need to be audited by their constituents.

They also should not be allowed to make more than the median income in their district. If they want to make more money, then they have to make their region better. Wouldn't that scare the pants off of them?

If they weren't paid then the only people we would have in office would be those with the ability to work for no money...oh wait, that may be true already.

Even if they din't get paid, they would still make so much money from the perks of being an elected official.

Yes, as if they were not paid, they would need to hold other jobs as well, which would create conflicts of interest.
