What makes you afraid of being alone in the dark anyways? Whatever is learned can be unlearned. Begin relating something positive to the dark..don't just sit there alone every night hoping to get used to it someday. Maybe, talk to someone you love or are close to on the phone while you're in the dark, or have your FAVORITE midnight snack in the dark, something enjoyable. Even, watching your favorite show in the dark. Everyone sees shadows, and sometimes wonders what's REALLY in the closet, I'm not afraid of the dark, but everyone gets a little freaked out being alone in the dark. Are you afraid when you close your eyes? That's complete darkness too, and if you were, you wouldn't be able to sleep, right? It's about making yourself comfortable in the dark and maybe instead of using darkness as a scary time, relating it to a nice, relaxing, putting together the thoughts of your day, what you're grateful for, everything positive about today and tomorrow, and letting darkness work WITH you instead of against you. Because chances are, there was something that made you uncomfortable in the dark (maybe before you can remember), and you need to slowly put new memories and feelings of being in the dark..good ones, comfortable ones. It is the thought of being in the dark, so notice the points of what makes you scared? What is it you're REALLY afraid of? Understand yourself because you know who you are better than anyone, if you just look a little deeper inside yourself and really see what's going on, noticing every thought and why it even crossed your mind.

Same here. I can't stand being alone in the dark. So when I need to (thankfully quite rarely), this is what I do:
1. I avoid watching unpleasant things on tv. Friends is great, as well as Finding Nemo (Save the super cool Japanese Horror movies for when you have company, right?)
2. I leave as many lights on as possible (Not very energy efficient this one though. But it drives the fear away)
3. I think of stuff I need to do the following today (i.e. tomorrow lunchtime I must remember to go pay the bills, etc) That way, I picture myself being busy at daytime with other people around.
4. Even better, I try to think of fun stuff that I have planned for a Saturday or a holiday. This always helps put a smile on!
5. I pick up the phone and have a chat with a friend for a while (Problem with this one is what if you get paranoid around 1am? You can't just wake your mate up, can you?)
6. I read magazines or focus on a Sudoku.

I have that too. What works for me is that when i am alone, i turn the tv or the radio on for some background noise, so when i hear a noise i can just blame it on the tv or radio. For the dark i just have a nitelight, but u have to remember that it is all in your head, and that your mind is playing triks on you.
