Bacteria are involved in decomposition, fixing Nitrates into the soil and digesting plant matter in the guts of herbivorous animals, for starters. Without this crops wouldn't grow, animals couldn't eat them and dead bodies wouldn't break down.

Bacteria are the ultimate step in returning elements back to the environment. What this means is that after animals die, for example, and after scavengers take what they can, bacteria continue the breakdown of the carcass. Elements from the carcass (carbon, nitrogen, etc.) return to the environment to be used once again.
