I have a pear tree but I don't know the type. The pears are round and juicy with a tough skin much like the asian pears that I see in the market (those are tan in color and mine are greener). Most of the pears are nice and round but many get deformed with huge indentations and are very asymetrical. They are still very good to eat but they don't look too pretty. Does anyone know what is causing this and what to do about it?
And if I could offer an extra ten point to anyone who can give me a name for my pears I would.

Oh, and the reason I worry about their appearance is because I'd like to give them away to family and friends without worrying that they will throw them away because of their shapes. This is a very prolific tree!

Sounds like a pear tree that we have around the south that we call a Rock Hard pear, or call it fall pears. Good for making pear jelly's. to stop the indentations on them. Spray with an oil base herbicides and fertilizer them about three times a year.

Standard pear, probably Bartlett. This appearance is ordinary in a regular old pear tree. There is nothing wrong with the pears. I am giving mine as gifts also but I am canning them and putting them in pretty jars. Everybody loves these pears. They are delicious canned and everyone looks forward to getting these from me every year. If you dont can, dont give people the pears unless they ask. They make nasty looking gifts and go from hard to ripe and rotten very quickly. That is why so many people dont bother with them.
