If he feels like he still wants to play, and that he could be a contributor on another team, then I think he made the right move in filing for free agency.

Personally, I would have liked to see him retire instead of trying to hang on well past his prime, but it's obviously his choice. If his last couple of years are any indication, though, I don't think he's going to find too many bidders out there. He's a 38-year-old whose OBP the last couple of years has been .321 and .332, with a serious dropoff in power and outfield defense.

He'll always be remembered as a Yankee, and it would have been good to see him go out that way.

Well.. Bernie could still play for the Yanks and he will....people that know about baseball will know that this is the face of the yanks not jeter(i still love jeter but bernie is the face of the yanks)...bernie will be the one to decide if he is coming back and if he says that he wants to come back, george will sign him....that is the power that bernie commands....although he doesnt show it...he is a class act and i will love to see him at least another year in the yanks pinstripes

I believe Bernie did it to keep his options open, the Yanks need his presence and he has demostrated that he wants to finish his career in NY.I believe Cashman will probably offer a similar deal to last years and have Bern stay in NY. He is an excellent ambassador for the game and he may yet get a great front office job in NY, by the way he is a very good musician too, go to berniewilliams.com....

Didn't he file for free agency last year and then sign with the Yankees during the winter? That of course can still happen. I think filing for free agency is a formality to keep the player's options open.

If he can make a few million bucks by playing another year, hey, to for it. But Cashman and George ought to offer him a front office job. Bernie is a great ambassador for baseball and plenty smart. He could really help as a minor league instructor.
But he probably has only one, possibly two more years left in that old body so if he can get it, hey, knock yourself out, Bernie.

I'd like to see him stay with the Yankees and retire as a Yankee.

It'a always sad to see a great player enter obscurity in another uniform other than the one with which he made himself famous. He should retire a yankee

retire as a yankee and become one of their coaches like all the other yankees in the past.

He should retire while he still has a good record. If he hangs around long enough, he will end up on the heap pile of so-so athletes.

Chow!!
