Should Bernie Williams have filed for free angency or retired as A Yankee?

Bernie is a Yankee!! Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Whitey Ford, Joe DiMaggio, were Yankees and only Yankees. Bernie is on a very special list of players to wear only Yankees pin strips. Even Yogi Berra can't say that as he played briefly with the Mets before retiring. If the Yankees offer him a contract, good, if not retire. My only concern would be that in my humble opinion Bernie would need 300 career home runs and 2500 career hits to give him a real shot at the Hall of Fame. Right now he is just short on both counts. With 4 world series rings and 6 AL pennants and a batting title he still might make it.

Bernie still believes that he can contribute to some team if it's not the Yankees. Don't forget he played in 75 games at Right field for the Yankees last season while Sheffield was hurt. With Melky Cabrera as their 4th outfielder Bernies playing time will be almost nothing hence the free agency.

Bernie is one of the greats. I can understand if he doesn't want to walk away from it yet, but I would HATE to see him step out in another uniform. I wish he would retire, but I understand why he wouldn't. He's a great musician tho, he could retire and focus on that!

I couldn't see him in another uniform--but then again look at Ricky Henderson--played for years after the A's. If he able to contribute -a team WIll pick him up!

He should retire while he has a good record. If he hangs around till the end, he will then be known as a so-so player and not the great athlete he is.
