Barry Sanders in my mind is the best. He was able to acheive more with less around him. Emmitt had Troy and Micheal, and Payton had great defense. But Sanders was the Lions!

Walter Payton by far, Walter could not only run, he hit the tackelers on his way to a touchdown u don't see any running backs do that today, Payton was an excellent blocker, and passer, he even backed up QB Jim Mchaon in a couple games where Jim Mchoan got hurt. Emmit Smith the only reason he broke walter payton record is that the barely ran over a 100 yds each season and he played for 16-19 yrs in the NFL, thats bulls***, Berry Sanders was just talent no work at all. I choose payton any day cuz he is relentless, and had a huge heart for the game.

I agree with most about the Walter Sander then Emitt at the bottem for the resaon that Emitt had no class. He came back when Payton was dead to get the record. No class at all. Honestly he tryed to help the community but it failed. Walter and Sanders were great players and great gentlemen off the feild and thats why they are so much better.

Walter was my favorite, but you asked who was the best. Barry Sanders hands down! If you look at the talent level around him, and what he was able to do week in and week out, you will notice he was a phenomenal player. If he had been a Cowboy with their offensive line, he would have been unstoppable. Barry Sanders and Walter Payton were two of the greatest gentlemen to ever play the game as well. They didn't need to show someone else up to make themselves look better.

Barry Sanders, if he had the same number of season as Walter Payton. Barry would've he had the career rushing record right now.
Barry Sanders: 15,269 yards in 10 seasons
19,849 yards based on average if he played for 13 seasons

Payton did it all and did it well but sanders might have the edge as a runner he was so elusive no one could make the moves that he made. i saw him on more then one occasion make the same guy miss him more then once on the same play, once i remember he made a guy miss tackle three times on the same run.. it was awesome...i have a hard time with this one but i can say they were both class acts and both at the top of the list

Barry Saunders. His teams stank, and the D knew what was coming and they still couldnt stop him.
Emmit had a lot of help, and decent coaches, and Walter was the classiest and a close second.

My personal favorite is Barry, though Walter and Emmitt were great players as well. Though I must agree that alot of Emmitt's sucess came from having a great line/FB to block and QB/WRs to take off pressure AND a longer career than many people near the top of the rushing list.

Emmitt Smith. Period.
He has the NFL career rushing record. 18,355 yards. That is an insane amount of yards. That's almost 2,000 yards more then Payton. He also has the NFL career rushing TDs record. He owns the two most important career rushing records.
