Food can go bad due to bacterial contamination - you would get sick if you ate it, so that the food would no longer be considered edible. For example, after a power outage, I had to clean out my refrigerator, and dispose of all the food that is no longer edible, but keep the food that is still edible.

I believe food is defined as being something we can eat hence "edible". But you could wonder whether a certain part of a plant or animal, is or isn't "edible". Also, what is edible for a given species is not always edible for others, so what is considered food for the first would not be for the second (species).

Some people may consider some foods inedible if they contain something they are allergic to or just dont like. Also some recipes just dont work and although the food is there it doesnt seem edible.
