It seems so vague. How do you 'hug a hoodie'?

Should I go up to them when they are smashing up my car and give them a big hug and a cupcake and everything will be ok?

Not literally, but I think, strictly speaking, there is some truth in this whole concept. I think ASBO's are a total waste of time and a huge insult to victims of the people reciving ASBO's. We need to look at why kids are like they are, get to the root of the problem. The truth is they aren't scared of their parents or the law, because, they know that if any physical force is used against them, the arresting officer/parent/teacher/etc, will get into serious trouble, more so perhaps than the little git themself, no matter what they have done!

I am not saying violence is the answer, I hate violence, but even when I was a kid (i'm only 26 now- LOL) peopel respected authority figures a lot more, and woudl never have dreamed to get up to so much, or sue a teacher, cop or parent for clipping them round the ear, or smacking their bum. Even grounding a child and sending them to their room nowadays isn't such a punishment, as they love it, yeah- we can go and watch telly or play our computer- where is the punishment in that I ask? Remove their luxuries until they can show they can behave and deserve to have these treats. Send tham to bed with no tea, but don't let them have a pack of crisps or a choccie bar insead!

All in all, it is about having a conscience- 'do un to others as you see fit for yourself' should be drilled into kids from an early age. No child is born bad or evil, it is how they are brought up and the chances they have in life. The education system needs a serious re-think, it is not fair at all at the moment, unless you have enough money to live in a good school's catchment area, or pay private school fees, your child is disadvantaged in their choice of schools.

We need a new government, we need fresh ideas, not stuffy old toffs as politicians, who can't see further than a nice car, wife, house and kids at private school. Britain is heading for disaster if we don't start making changes ASAP. I think we also need local council control, somone who can make decisions locally and can be seen as a figure of community to look up to and respect. Tony Blair is too alien, too far away, and can not poissibly be seen as caring about your district like a local MP would. Its not his fault, it is the systems fault.

I wish David Cameron would be willing to enter into an informed and cogent discussion of his ideas, rather than resorting to buzzwords.

Perhaps I am overestimating his intelligence (as he seems to be underestimating mine and that of the entire electorate) but I think he might be onto something, if his catchy phrases are supposed to mean that we need to re-engage with each other as families and communities, focusing on creating meaningful, respectful and even loving bonds between each other. That's something I might buy.

In the meantime, I wouldn't recommend hugging a hoodie you see on the street, you might get arrested for assault!

No. Thing is, legally, you can't retaliate when they are vandalising your property, terrorising the elderly, assaulting people in the street, stealing your wallet or even your car because it would violate their "human rights".

Im gonna get rounded on for this, but im not the only one here who thinks like this so here goes.....

If you are one of these horrible little oiks then you can get away with what you like. You can assault innocent people at random in street, film it, post it on the internet and still not get caught. They hang around in gangs of ten or more, covering their faces because they are bascially cowards who are afraid of being caught. They give decent kids a bad name, hard working people grief and financial problems through clearing up their mess and paying for methodone only for them to assault hospital staff and the emergency services.

"Hug a hoodie"!!!???. No id sooner give them all a free ticket to old trafford, lock the doors and then set fire to it.

Should we hell.. I personally think this government we have now sucks and that rights to punish these thugs in a languge that will teach them a lesson should be put back into the parents and teachers hands.. I'm sick of kids ruling these streets we live on...

Unfortunately yes. Although most people (including myself) would like to see the little bastards stoned to death and pay for the privilege, the only way we will see a complete downfall of crime and antisocial behaviour is to stop it at the source, and that means not punishing criminals but helping them back into society with them WANTING to be part of a law abiding society and / or, not letting them be criminals in the first place.

Unfortunately this means that us law abiding citizens will have to cope with the indignity of not feeling justice is being done and not having our desire for revenge being morbidly full filled, but for our children and their children's sake, its has to be done.

I'll probably change my mind next time I'm being beaten up or stabbed but the theory's sound.
