music changes with time, as do we, people say what they want to say and think what they want to think, so its all up to you. if you have fun listening to music or if it makes you think, thats your taste. go with it.

Some people find certain things in life to be "more fun" when it's considered new and different from what they've been used to. When you introduce something new and different to a large group of people then you would most likely judge it by their initial reaction. With rock n roll, I think that early on many people found it exciting because there were so many possibilities and unexplored levels. No one knew what to expect next. It may have lead people to believe that rock n roll itself was fun when it was really that they were allowing themselves to have more fun with it because it was something new.
I think the reaction today is different since it now has a known history. Someone may still feel the same excitement the first time they hear a rock n roll album but soon they may feel 'it's all been done before'. Like anything else that proves to be popular, there will always be people that become involved with the sole intention of making a profit. That was something that was there since the beginning. Once it became apparent that the profits were tremendous, more people became interested, competition became greater and it was taken more seriously since a lot of money was at stake.
Rock n roll music can still be just as fun as it was years ago. It's the industry that may seem more serious.

I don't think the music is too serious but I do think the artists take themselves too seriously. If they need to take themselves so seriously then they should not worry about selling loads of albums and focus on their art. A true artist doesn't get rich or popular overnight. A band that is just out to have some fun will produce something that more people (especially teens) will like and be more financially successful. Too many recording artists try to have it both ways and it doesn't usually work.
Back 'in the day' there were certain artists who were out to pass on a message and not to make money or be popular (or fun). Now, any artist will speak up about politics and expect to be heard and don't like it when they catch flack about it.
And I think they need to eliminate all these awards shows. How can it be fun if you have idiots like Kanye West spoiling someone else's award acceptance because his video was more elaborate?

i agree with the above answer that everything goes in cycles, but as it does, it becomes easier to pose and whine about the same old crap than actually be creative. right now we're recycling the 80's, and when it comes time for the 90's to be dredged up again, where it's cool/ironic to be psycho/artsy/depressed-looking and drug-addled, i think everything entertainment-wise will go to hell. a new Nine Inch Nails/ Marilyn Manson clone army will rise up, destroying any positive vibe in favor of hip nihilistic self-absorption. the media will sell it, and we'll play the role.
no wonder why "Classic Rock" is still popular and relevant... there was actually legitimate subject matter being brought forth, not some 20-year old kid screaming that life is worthless, or freaks hiding behind samplers programming self-destructive mantras into our heads.

people have changeed! It is so commercial now- so expensive. People hare more aggressive and less communal.
Years ago when people were smmoking pot theyshared drugs and booze. The only fights occured between those who were drinking. You didn't worry about hepes or AIDS from sharing a joint.
Now the in vogue drugs are prone to make people aggressive and completely void of social limits.
Look comparatively at both eras- I'll take the seventies anyday over what is going on today.

it seems old rock was more about fun itself, 'summer of 69' for example is all about fun and there doesn't seem to be many comparable songs these days. most of them are about real life and who wants to jam to real life?

Yeah it was always about the music back then but now it seems to be more about marketing and not offending anyone.
