Try searching around for information on graphic design vs. advertising design. I think that will get you a lot closer to what you are looking for. Graphic designers typically do print layouts, packaging design, billboards, brochures, press kits, direct mail pieces, newspaper inserts, point of sale materials and displays, signage sometimes, and all sorts of things like that.

I worked in advertising agencies (print houses, not the real-deal agencies that do broadcast) for many years and I found there were two educations that were good. The first is graphic design. There are hundreds of graphic design programs so you won't have trouble finding one near you. BUT, the people who I thought were really head and shoulders above were the people who had been true art majors, even fine art majors. They got into levels of composition, and color-theory, and other stuff that I felt really gave them an edge when it came to working on truly creative work.

Advertising is a vast field. Earlier it was just print advertising followed by outdoor advertising. Then digital advertising came in and not the latest entrant is the internet advertising.

If you would like to get into designing/techinal section of the field the first this is to become a graphic designer and then progress ahead with website designing software or mutlimedia courses. This is fairly common for any advertising design work.

However if you are aiming to become an advertising consultant or an account executive other specialized courses would be available. On the creative front, ie putting together the add concept, developing ideas its just creativity that speaks.
