What was the first month on the Roman calendar?

In early times the Roman calendar was made up of ten months.
Martius began the year and September was the seventh month.

Later on, they adopted the twelve month year which began with Ianuarius. This had the effect of bringing September into the 9th month position that we are familar with, though retaining the name that related to its old 7th position. Martius was also pushed forward to occupy 3rd month position.
