Mercury is always pretty close to the Sun.

If Mercury is in Sagittarius, the Sun must be in Sagittarius as well, or in one of the adjacent constellations, Capricorn or Scorpio, since the orbit of Mercury is small. The distance between Mercury and the Sun is not affected by which constellation they appear in---it can be near or relatively far from the Sun in any position along the ecliptic.
