I had this assignment in arts and humanities once and we had to take an inanimate object and change its character or 'mood' by making subtle changes or additions. Example: I did a child's wooden rocking horse and the slip of paper i drew was "evil or mean" so i put teeth and pointed eyes etc. It was really interesting and challenging.

Well, usually your instructor would give you some direction to go in when it comes to sketching, like if it were for a project. But, if it's just sketching, do singular items around the house. A lamp, a chair, a dog, whatever. Sketching is the process of quickly developing an image without incredible detail, so it's doesn't require too much effort. ANYTHING can be drawn. Don't think about it, just do it.

Draw an object using the three basic shapes or not! If someone ask what your doing, say it's an abstract!

drawing pets (any pet!) is a task I always recomend to my students. As animals move all the time, students start make great drawings in very short time...less time you have for making skatches, the better they will be by time.
good luck

Well, if you know Devanaagarii, you can always draw the different letters. There is a, aa, i, ii, u, uu, ri, rii, lu, luu, e, ai, o, au, m, ha, ka, kah ga, gha, na with a dot on top, ca, cha, ja, jha, na with a tilde, ta, tha, da, dha, na, all with a dot underneath, ta, tha, da, dha, na with nothing, pa, pha, ba, bha, ma, ya, ra, la, va, sha with a apostorphe at the top, sha, with a dot underneath, sa, and ha. All these syllables have their own distinct shape and you can simply type Devanagari and you can learn the shapes in no time.

Look towards the lighted background / forground, stare at it off focus, then quickly blink your eyes shut and remember what vision remains for that instant, from the back of your eyelids. You were probably shown this when you were a kid.
