Why can't they do anything for the poor horses stranded in the Netherlands on a tiny piece of land amongst floods? They've just reported it on the news that they've been there for 4 days but said they could be there for another 7 days (if at all) and all plans to rescue so far have been unsuccessful or abandoned. Being an animal lover I'm really upset by this and wish they could have waited to report this until they were rescued. Why do the media make us feel so helpless? I hardly ever watch the news and wish I didn't now as it's made me feel very sad.

Scout485 - of course I'm aware of the human suffering around the world. I just happen to think more of animals than I do MOST humans! Harsh but true!

Lolkedoum - I was aware of the situation in a brief way but your answer was very indepth and made things more clear, thanks. I know it was the owners fault too and he should be punished.

I am Dutch and live actually quite close to where all these horses are stranded.
The thing why they can't 'just' rescue those horses is this:
The land where they are on is under normal circumstances grazing land for the horses.
There has been a flooding due to some storm so the water has risen substancely.
Because of all this high water, the rescuers don't quite know where all the fences and barbwires are.
They are animal friends as well, so they don't want the horses to be injured by the wires, like I guess you can understand..

The whole problem is actually that the owner of the horses and the Frisian Nature Society had known since October 15 that there would be a storm these days and they should never had let the horses out or atleast getting them in savely in time before the storm broke loose.
They haven't done all of this, so now they will probably be sued.

Now there are loads of people who are trying to help out the horses.
People are supplying the horses with fresh water and hay, so they are taken care of the horses.
The Dutch army is actually helping out as well, but they couldn't get the horses off their little "island".
They have been trying to get them off with floating pontons but the animals didn't trust these things orso because they didn't get on it.
It's also more difficult because these horses are nearly wild, they don't get ridden or whatever, so they will have some temper as well.

The only thing (except for air operations, which I don't think they are thinking about) how to get them off now is to wait untill the water levels lower again so the owner of the land, the owner of the horses and the people who are trying to help these horses can orientate where exactly the fences and barbwires and creeks are so they can get the animals safely out of there.
Unfortunatly, it seems like it will take another few days before the water has lowered enough for that.
This is why it takes so long.

I hope this will help you a bit.

Btw, unfortunatly this whole situation already claimed the lives of atleast 18 horses.

And now I wish I hadn't come on answers coz I new nothing about this until now, and now I'm sad too. Poor horses. They would need to be lifted out in a strap by helicopter. Thing is, this would take ages as you could only do one horse at a time. And the other horses would no doubt be terrified and panic. Now, I'm not sure of the exact situation and I don't know how deep or strong the current is, but horses are bloody good swimmers. They are not thick either. They can get them selves out of danger if need be. Belive in the horse! Go the horses!!!

And over 40 people have died in Turkey in the past couple of days in flooding. Where is your outrage on that? Horses are more important than human lives? You need to expand your horizons, and see what is really happening around the nation and your world.

Horses are fantastic swimmers. They'll make the break when they feel like it. They're probably being put off swimming by all the attention being foisted on them.

Well, if they wait until things have been resolved, it's history, not news. I can understand your being upset, but really, if you can't cope with the reality that things happen that you're not going to like, then just don't watch the news.
